A large water battery with a storage capacity of 20 million kWh has been in operation in Switzerland since July 2022. It is also an advantage for the environment.
14 long years to make it, but now it is finally active. We are talking about a finally finished large water battery , located in the middle of the canton of Valais, in Switzerland . The amazing feature is that it will have a storage capacity of 20 million KWh. Thus it will produce large quantities of clean energy and represent a positive side for the environment. Specifically, it is a huge artificial plant to produce hydroelectricity. It will exploit different heights of reservoirs. An ingenious operation developed by the Nant de Drance company.
The water coil in its operation and design is very simple. On the mountain there are two large water reservoirs at different heights. When the water passes from the highest to the lowest reservoir, the turbines produce electricity . All using the movement of water as in a hydroelectric plant. Subsequently the water is then carried by hydraulic pumps into the upper reservoir when there is no need for energy.
Its peculiarity is also, as mentioned above, its very high storage capacity : 20 million kWh . This is the first example of a Swiss water battery. Furthermore, it represents a first giant step for the generation of clean energy directed to large portions of the territory.
Why is it clean? It’s easy, energy is produced in a really simple way using only the movement of water. At the same time, the construction of the storage system allows the storage of surplus electricity to be used in times of need. A real input towards the protection of the environment and its safeguard from further pollution.
