The first MacBook equipped with an OLED display could be arriving very soon. The well-known analyst Ming-Chi Kuo is certain of this, according to which the next-generation laptop could arrive as early as 2024. Kuo, however, does not specify whether the laptop will belong to the MacBook Pro or MacBook Air line.

One possible clue comes from Ross Young , DSCC’s #1 and usually well-informed source on the behind-the-scenes of the consumer electronics industry. According to Young, it is extremely likely that Apple will decide to introduce OLED technology first on the MacBook Air and on the iPad Pro and only later also on the MacBook Pro.

Apple has waited a long time to introduce OLED technology on its largest devices, i.e. those that are generally kept alive the longest, before replacing them with the successor model. Different story for smartphones, which consumers tend to change every three or four years. The reasons for this prudence are easily explained by the phenomenon of burn in, i.e. the risk – common to most OLED panels – that the pixels may burn out after viewing a still image for a long time (for example a paused video). A risk that is well present on OLED televisions, but which on tablets and laptops could be even more pronounced, given that they are frequently used to show non-dynamic content (think of a spreadsheet or a text document).

Apple, in other words, has preferred to wait for the technology behind OLED panels to become less immature. We remind you that Apple intends to use hybrid panels, a relatively recent technology.

OLED panels introduce several advantages, starting from real blacks and images with absolute contrast. The fact that the pixels do not have to be backlit allows to significantly reduce the space occupied by the screen, allowing to reduce its thickness.
