Messaging app WhatsApp has been fined 5.5 million euros for violating European Union (EU) data privacy.

The Data Protection Commission, located in Ireland, where WhatsApp is headquartered in Europe, announced that the company is forcing users to allow their personal data to be used.

The commission stated that WhatsApp wanted this data to be used to provide “service improvements and security”.

Determining that WhatsApp violated EU data privacy, the Commission fined the company 5.5 million euros.

Will appeal decision

The Commission has decided that WhatsApp will align its data processing processes with EU privacy rules within 6 months.

On the other hand, WhatsApp announced that it will appeal the decision.

In September 2021, the Irish Data Protection Commission fined messaging app WhatsApp 225 million euros for breaching data rules.
