Water chips could be the future of neural networks

Researchers are working on a new type of water microprocessor that could one day be a more efficient replacement for the current silicon architecture in certain tasks such as AI, artificial neural networks, DNA synthesis, and more.

The water chip is still in the prototype stage , so you should not count on the imminent appearance of such processors on the market. Although it already sounds extremely intriguing, especially for those who are familiar with the Fallout series.

This processor is based on ionics, which involves the manipulation of various ions in a liquid, as opposed to the use of electrons and transistors.

Such a water chip works with information like the human brain, and although it is noticeably slower than modern semiconductors, scientists believe that a variety of ions with different physical and chemical properties can be used for richer and more multi-level information processing.

Now the water chip consists of an array of 16 by 16 computing elements, which is extremely far from one and a half hundred billion transistors in traditional processors, scientists have managed to calculate for a neural network.

The water chip uses a special type of transistor that manipulates local PH values, allowing scientists to control the weights of the matrix, similar to how it works in a neural network.

To date, scientists have tested only 3-4 types of ions, but the analysis of other ions will allow us to assess the future potential of this technology.

It is still very early to say whether water chips will find application in practice, especially since progress in creating new and more powerful semiconductors also does not stand still.
