US jobless claims come in at 240,000, better than expected

Unemployment claims in the US, under the shadow of the economic recession, came in at 240,000 in the week ending November 19, above expectations.

According to the seasonally adjusted data announced by the US Department of Labor, the world’s largest economy, the number of applications, which was previously announced as 222,000 in the week of November 12, was revised to 223,000.​

Economists had predicted that applications for unemployment benefits would amount to 22​000​.

The four-week average of US jobless claims, which is considered a better indicator of US labor market trends, rose to 226,750.

The total number of people benefiting from unemployment benefits in the USA increased to 1.551 million in the week of November 12.
