Incoming video calls on WhatsApp

The picture-in-picture feature is being tested on the beta version of the iPhone app, here’s how it works.

Superimposed video calls could be the next substantial novelty expected on WhatsApp : the picture-in-picure (PiP) function will make the screen less constrained when you are making a single or group video chat, since it will create a window that you can move at will being able to continue to use the smartphone. The test is underway in the beta versions on iPhone, while on Android some tests are being carried out on the new emojis which will then be spread across the entire platform in the first months of 2023.

There are therefore two new features that could soon land on the stable version of WhatsApp. The first was identified on iOS (version 22.24.0.79, 78 and 77) with video call display in picture-in-picture mode to ensure the right multitasking: once the conversation has started, the video can be reduced to a small window which can be moved around the display where you want best and you can also exit the app to use other software, without the risk of closing the call. This novelty follows the new path of WhatsApp, marked by greater general openness, as also demonstrated by the multi-device option , which has been loudly requested and is finally available.

The second novelty concerns the beta version 2.22.25.12 21 of WhatsApp for Android and focuses on the well- known new emoji approved by the Unicode consortium for 2023. There are 21 of them in the testing phase, for now only visible in the strings of the code and therefore not yet usable: moreover, there are some small differences in about a dozen smileys already available, such as in the one with shining eyes, which has been slightly retouched.
