The Ministry of the Environment and Energy Security (Mase) has reached the goal of the ‘Protection and enhancement of urban and extra-urban greenery’ by 2022. Over 1 million and 800 thousand trees will be planted in eleven Italian cities. The following metropolitan cities were involved: Turin, Genoa, Venice, Rome, Naples, Bari, Reggio Calabria, Palermo, Messina, Catania, and Cagliari. There are 110 types of plants, of which 55 are trees and 55 are shrubs. 

It is a large public investment that aims to preserve and enhance biodiversity , reduce air pollution and improve air quality This is a fundamental step in reaching the final goal of planting at least six million six hundred thousand trees in 14 metropolitan cities by 2026, covering a total of 1,268 Municipalities, equal to 15.47% of the national territory, where more than 21 million live. of people. As Mase and as a Government we are working hard to achieve all the goals of the second half of 2022, to be able to present the third payment request to Brussels by the end of next December. We are on the finishing straight.

The trees project took place on the basis of the urban and extra-urban forestation plan. A tool that allows metropolitan cities to identify and plant the most suitable tree species for the biogeographical and ecological peculiarities of the territories involved. The objective was achieved thanks to the work of the metropolitan cities which presented the projects to the Mase and implemented the planting. Thanks also to the CUFA (Arma dei Carabinieri, Forestry, Environmental and Agri-Food Unit Command) which has made over two million seeds available.
