The world consumption of extra virgin olive oil has reached 6.3 billion euros, or rather 5.3% more than in 2018. The countries to record these data are America, Italy and Spain. There is also Turkey, which goes from 7 million euros in 2018 to 70 in 2021. Afterwards, Portugal comes with +44.5 million euros, Germany (+44.1 million euros) and France (+ 16.5 million euros).

The Asia-Pacific area is also showing strong growth . In South Korea, purchases have increased by 16 million euros in just 4 years. Japan and China remain the main countries to which the product is destined, reporting more than 100 million imports in 2021. The US exceeded 900 million euros, in second place as importers worldwide . Brazil has more than 300 million euros in imports in 2021. Then Mexico (+6.5 million euros), Colombia (+4.5 million euros) and Canada (+2.2 million euros).

International consumption is growing, but Italy is decreasing the production of extra virgin olive oil. Our country will not go beyond 230 thousand tons, or 30% of last season. The cause is also the drought of the past summer. Puglia weighs heavily on the Italian production of this product due to the Xylella which continues to claim victims among the centenary olive trees of Salento. A relative weight to a decrease of 50%.
