Known as ‘the quietest place on the planet’ at -20.6 decibels, no one has ever stayed in this room for more than an hour. Those who enter the room and close the door can hear the heartbeat, blood flow and even the creaking of their bones after a while.
Silence is something we all need from time to time, but when you’re in the quietest room in the world, it can drive you crazy.
ENTERED IN THE GUINNESS RECORD BOOK! THE QUIETEST PLACE ON THE WORLD This room, built by
Microsoft in 2015 in its headquarters in Redmond, took its place in the Guinness Book of Records as ‘the quietest place on the planet’ with -20.6 decibels.
So what does -20.6 decibels mean for us? In order to better understand this figure, first of all, it is necessary to state that the human hearing limit is 0 decibels, but the fact that our ears do not hear does not mean that there is no sound at all, that’s why there are negative values. For example, the collision of air molecules at room temperature produces a sound of -24 decibels.
NO ONE STAYED MORE THAN ONE HOUR
Nobody could bear to stay in this room for more than an hour, also known as the
‘ Anechoic Chamber ‘ . Those who walk in say that even swallowing their own saliva feels incredibly loud and they feel dizzy after a point.
INSIDE 6 LAYERS OF CONCRETE WALLS, THE WALLS ARE 30 CM THICKNESS
This room, in which the technological devices of the future are built, is housed in six floors of concrete walls to prevent the outside sound. In this building, which can be defined as a ‘room within a room’ , all walls are 30 cm thick, thus preventing 110 decibels of sound.
Microsoft employees listen to electronic devices in this room, trying to detect vibrations caused by capacitors in the electronic circuit assembly as electric current passes. In addition, settings are made in this room so that each key on the keyboard gives a certain sound; microphone and speakers are tested here.
EVERYTHING IS SPECIALLY DESIGNED
According to the news in the BBC, the sides of the cube-shaped room are 6.36 meters long. All surfaces are covered with 1.2 meters of sound absorbing sponge. Thus, the sound is prevented from hitting the walls and echoing. There are also special insulations in the frame of the doors. Everything from ventilation, cable entries to fire extinguishing equipment is custom designed.
YOU HEAR FROM YOUR BLOOD FLOW TO THE CRACKING OF YOUR BONES
The most talked about feature of the anechoic room is not that you hear nothing, but that you can hear your own body as all other outside noises have disappeared.
Shortly after you walk into the room and close the door, you begin to hear your own heartbeat, a few minutes later you can hear your blood flow and how your bones creak. Those who enter the room tell that when there is no sound from the outside world, absolute silence gradually turns into an unbearable ringing in your ears.
A NEW RECORD
IS AT THE DOOR On the other hand, a new room built at Orfield Laboratories in Minneapolis has filed for Guinness World Records. Oda plans to break the record of ‘the anechoic chamber’ with -24 decibels.
