Microsoft, one of the software and technology giants based in the United States, started to show some warnings to Windows 8.1 users that the support of the old operating system will be discontinued soon.

According to the information on the warning screen, the security updates and technical support given to the operating system will end on January 10, 2023. The company also told users on the warning screen, “We appreciate your loyalty and we are contacting you to help you prepare for the next step.

Support for Windows 8.1 actually ended on January 9, 2018

The alert notification started appearing in the past weeks with the Windows 8.1 cumulative update KB5015874. When users log into the operating system, they see this screen for the first time and have to choose one of the “Remind later” or “Remind me after support end” options to turn off the warning.

Microsoft states that users who have Pro and Enterprise devices used in the business world and Windows Embedded 8.1 Industry Enterprise and Windows Embedded 8.1 Industry Pro devices will not receive this notification.

General support for Windows 8.1 actually ended on January 9, 2018, but extended support began after that. On January 10, 2023, Microsoft will completely stop supporting this operating system.
