The announcement was made by Yasuhide Mizuno, CEO of Sony Honda Mobility joint venture. He said the car will be available for pre-order in the US in the first half of 2025, and the first deliveries will be delivered to North American customers in the spring of 2026.
The brand of the car developed by Sony and Honda has been revealed: Afeela
Afeela, the first electric car developed by two giant technology companies Sony and Honda, was introduced at CES 2022, one of the world’s most important technology-focused fairs. The announcement was made by Yasuhide Mizuno, CEO of Sony Honda Mobility joint venture. He said the car will be available for pre-order in the US in the first half of 2025, and the first deliveries will be delivered to North American customers in the spring of 2026.
The electric car with Level 3 autonomous driving system is 4895 mm long, 1900 mm wide and 1460 mm high. There are more than 40 sensors in the electric car. The design of the car is similar to Sony’s VISION-S vehicle. It was noted that Afeela will also activate its software-based subscription system.
Last March, it was announced that Japan-based Sony and Honda decided to cooperate for electric cars and that they would establish a joint venture company within the scope of this cooperation . Sony Honda Mobility electric car, which was established in the Honda-Sony partnership in October, was said to be introduced to the US market in 2026. Mizuno noted that they will start electric vehicle production at Honda’s factory in North America. Only 3 months have passed since this announcement. Sony, which has been working on electric cars for many years, has proven that Honda uses its experience in the field of automobiles with the introduction made at CES.
The electric car industry made a rapid entry into 2023. Although we are only in the first week of the new year, the prototypes introduced and the statements made signal that this year will also be active for the market.
But this activity started in the last months of 2022. At the Los Angeles Auto Show in November of last year, Fiat CEO Olivier Francois announced that he would launch the all-electric Fiat 500e in the US in the first quarter of 2024 . He also said they plan to introduce a subscription system for electric cars to be sold across the country. In other words, he stated that they would go beyond traditional sales methods.
Oliver Francois stated that he believed in exploring alternative business models and reshaping the automobile business. François explained that Fiat’s strategy is focused on the future of e-mobility, or electric vehicles, with a car designed for the city, rather than increasing US sales.
