Depression: is it treated with electrostimulation?

Dutch researchers have shown how electrostimulation of the brain can alleviate depression . This is a valid future support which, to be tested, saw the selection of 25 depressed volunteers. In practice, patients who have taken psychiatric drugs, had psychotherapy and other treatments, but without solving the problem. Many had also terminated all social relationships, reporting thoughts of suicide and even valued euthanasia as a final way out.

The depressed volunteers were implanted with electrodes in the brain, the area most involved in depression. The electrodes create an electromagnetic disturbance between neurons by reducing the excess of disorganized communication that often occurs in such patients. The control on the patients subjected to the test lasted from 6 to 9 years. In the end, 44% improved significantly with a 50% reduction in depression.

Others, 28%, reported a decrease in depression of only 25%. The remaining 28% found no benefit. In the latter there had been an implantation error in the brain of the electrodes. Installing the electrodes is a very delicate and difficult method, you have to position them exactly and quite precisely. It’s not just about turning a button off or on. In the future, these first steps of the research will have to be validated and verified with a new group of volunteer participants. One way to see if the results of the first experiment will be confirmed.
