Sony and Honda introduce electric car brand ‘AFEELA’
The first AFEELA-branded concept car was presented at CES in Las Vegas. Among other things, it can count on a partnership with Epic Games.
Sony Honda Mobility, the joint venture created by the two Japanese giants at the end of 2022, has presented a new automotive brand. It is called AFEELA and will be used for all fully electric cars born from this alliance.
On the occasion of CES in Las Vegas, the joint venture presented a new concept car, the first officially born from the partnership between Honda and Sony. On the occasion of CES 2020, Sony had already presented a concept car: the futuristic Sony Vision S, an actually fully functional electric car (so much so that it has also been tested on European roads) with intriguing lines and a large arsenal of state-of-the-art sensors and tech solutions.
The first AFEELA-branded concept measures 4,895mm long x 1,900mm wide x 1,460mm high. The dashboard is dominated by large infotainment screens, while at the front we find what Sony Honda Mobility calls the Media Bar , a solution that allows you to communicate with pedestrians, improving road safety. The joint venture did not provide powertrain information.
The car is equipped with 45 different sensors, while for ADAS it uses the Qualcomm Snapdragon Digital Chassis platform. It has what it takes to deliver Level 2 autonomous driving , even though the joint venture is already working on Level 3 technology.
Returning to infotainment, Sony and Honda also want to bring video games inside the cockpit of their cars, as done by Tesla. To do this, they have partnered with Epic Games, the developer behind Fortnite.
Sony’s debut in the automotive industry was anticipated with great anticipation. Sony has a long history of innovation in technology and consumer electronics: it has all the tools to bring about significant change within the electric car sector. Electric vehicles produced in concert with Honda are expected to be equipped with advanced and latest technologies, such as high-quality infotainment systems and advanced driver assistance systems.
