Record fine for Epic Games

Epic Games, the developer of Fortnite, has been fined a record 500 million dollars in the USA.

The US Federal Trade Commission has fined Fortnite developer Epic Games more than $500 million over allegations that it illegally collected data about children and led millions to purchase it.

The penalty in question was recorded as the largest ever fine by US regulators, which fights “dark models” that allow users to make decisions by misleading users in games.

“Deceptive interfaces used”

“As our complaints indicate, Epic used default settings and deceptive interfaces that interfered with privacy and deceived Fortnite users, including teenagers and children,” said Lina Khan, Chairman of the U.S. Federal Trade Commission.

In two separate legal complaints, the US Federal Trade Commission accused Epic of violating US child protection laws, failing to obtain parental consent from Fortnite players under the age of 13, and establishing an unreasonable, inconsistent, and confusing order in the in-game virtual goods store that resulted in players paying unwanted fees.
