OpenAI prepares to watermark AI-generated content

OpenAI is looking for new ways to differentiate AI-generated content from the rest. In this context, the company is preparing to add watermarks to content created by artificial intelligence.

Recently, everyone has come across chats created with ChatGPT somewhere . The artificial intelligence of OpenAI , which responds as if it were written by a human , continues to create question marks in the minds of many people. OpenAI is looking for new ways to avoid this confusion and differentiate AI-generated content from the rest. In this context, the company is preparing to add watermarks to content created by artificial intelligence.

OpenAI already has some ways to mark another authoring tool called DALL-E with a signature built into every image it produces. However, following the source of the text is much more difficult than the visual. For this, it is necessary to add a hidden, hard-to-remove tag to the words. How OpenAI will do this is a matter of serious curiosity. The most promising approach in this context is said to be cryptography.

OpenAI research scientist Scott Aaronson explained that words can be turned into a string of tokens that represent punctuation, letters or parts of words, creating a total of about 100,000 tokens. He said the GPT system can then issue these tokens and they can be detected using an encryption key known only to OpenAI. In other words, there will be no situation affecting the end user.

Aaronson actually said that it would be difficult for anyone using a GPT tool to clean up the watermark signal, even by rearranging words or removing punctuation. The best way to beat this would be to use another AI system to interpret the output of the GPT tool; however, he stated that this requires effort and that not everyone can do it.

As a result, OpenAI needs to prioritize a watermark system for their text as ChatGPT becomes so popular. We’ll have to wait and see how he will do that.
