Italian economy: the effect of climate change

One third of Italian companies are at risk of serious economic losses due to natural phenomena . A recent study claimed that these risks are attributable to climate change. The study was conducted for insurance companies by CRIF and RED companies, which specialize in assessing climate-induced risks.

Natural phenomena have an index of danger that looms over the whole national territory. For example, the risk of landslides affects companies in mountainous areas. Coastal areas are more exposed to flooding due to torrential rains. Other areas, on the other hand, are more affected by heavy snow and large hail.

In Italy the true impact of climatic events on the economy is not yet known. Here, in order to make the reality of the problem understood, the study by CRIF and RED has focused attention on rising temperatures . An example are the heat waves from 2040 to 2049. It is deduced that the Italian provinces most exposed to the sudden rise will be those of the South and the Po valley.

The phenomenon will mainly affect agriculture , trade and logistics . The services, on the other hand, will be those least at risk. In any case, 25% of companies will be affected, 7% of those on national territory will suffer losses (with a peak in Southern Italy of 55%). The study also quantified the average annual losses resulting from the impacts of physical risks. They are equal to 0.65% of the current company turnover. A figure that will become worrying by 2050.
