Starting from 1 January 2024, Milan will become a “Zone 30” city. It will no longer be possible to circulate at speeds exceeding 30 kilometers per hour, both in the center and in the suburbs. In the so-called high-speed roads, limits to 50km/h may in any case be envisaged.

The City Council of Milan has already approved an agenda that commits the Municipality to take action in this sense. The order was signed by the councilor of the Sala List Marco Mazzei, who proudly endorses the proposal.

«The limit of 30 km/h – explains Mazzei – first of all protects the life and health of people and improves the quality of the air and the well-being of the city. Furthermore, it allows for much more radical choices on the management of public space and on the very idea of the street».

Mazzei argues that the 30km/h limit drastically reduces the possibility that a vehicle impact with a pedestrian or cyclist will result in a fatal episode. «An impact at 50km/h is almost always fatal for those who suffer it, not at 30km/h».

But Mazzei’s proposal doesn’t quite satisfy the entire extremist front lined up against privately owned cars. Enrico Fedrighini, a colleague also elected on the Sala List, argues that the real goal must be the radical reduction of urban traffic. «In central Milan», he argues, «the average speed is already 15Km / h and not 30, yet pedestrians and cyclists are increasingly being rounded up».

On the opposite front, the opposition, which attacks the Comune Sala, accusing it of penalizing workers and commuters, making the car a luxury for the few. “They want to block the city for ideological choices”, thunders the center-right. Starting in 2023, the City will organize an advertising campaign to explain the change to residents.
