In short, no one in history had ever reduced his personal wealth – in absolute values ​​- by so many billions. A different story if we take the relative values: history is full of hyper-scrooges who ended up in disgrace, completely burning their assets. Just think of the years of the dotcom bubble, but also of the more recent story of Sam Bankman-Fried, a cryptocurrency magnate who fell into disgrace and went from being one of the youngest under 30 to becoming a billionaire to having virtually zero assets.

Elon Musk continues to fare relatively well. His personal wealth is estimated at around 140 billion dollars (most of which in Tesla shares and therefore subject to volatility). At the end of 2022 Elon Musk lost the title of richest man in the world, handing over the scepter and crown to the fashion magnate Bernard Arnault.

Previously, the record in the largest loss of personal fortune  category was held by Japanese investor Masayoshi Son , who lost $56.6 billion in a short time in 2000.
