App that tells you if you are positive for Covid

The future of Covid positive diagnoses lies in the smartphone. So you can almost say goodbye to rapid and molecular swabs. An application was presented at the International Congress of the European Respiratory Society which, using an artificial intelligence , is able to tell whether or not one is positive for Covid by analyzing the voice . This would make diagnoses quicker and cheaper.

The researchers took as a starting point 893 audio samples of 4352 participants, of which 308 positive for Covid, collected by the University of Cambridge with the Covid-19 Sounds app . After registering and providing some information, users had to record some audio tracks: cough three times, breathe deeply through their mouth three to five times, and read a short sentence three times.

Scientists tested various artificial intelligences from which it emerged that the LSTM ( Long-Short Term Memory ) model is able to find about 89% of positives and 83% of negatives. According to the data, artificial intelligence makes mistakes less often than quick swabs as the latter can give a false negative in 44% of cases against 11% of the AI. At the same time this reveals more positive cases than expected (17% versus 0.5% of rapid swabs).

These tests can be provided free of charge and the results are easy to interpret. Given the speed of diagnosis, less than a minute, they could be used to check people witnessing large events.
