Charlotte Webster-Salter, 27, began suffering from ulcers in her mouth in 2018 while working as a flight attendant. Working hard in long shifts, the young woman initially thought that the wounds in her mouth were temporary and were caused by fatigue, but the wounds did not go away.

The young woman, who decided to go to a doctor after searching for answers for the sores that did not go away for 2 years, said, “The ulcers in my mouth were strangely always coming out at one point. For years, I thought they were due to stress or fatigue. Later, I thought that the problem was in spicy food and changed my eating style. I went to the dentist and had my teeth done, nothing helped,” he said.

In 2021, Charlotte went to an otolaryngologist, and samples were taken from the white spots on her tongue and a biopsy was performed. The biopsy results revealed that the woman had a tumor called ‘squamous cell carcinoma’ in her tongue, and she was diagnosed with cancer.

WHEN DIAGNOSED, HIS MOTHER WAS TREATED FOR CANCER

Charlotte, whose mother was also treated for breast cancer when she learned of her illness, described her experiences as follows:

“When they said it, I just laughed, I didn’t know how to react. Cancer was the furthest thing on my mind and the hardest thing was explaining it to my mom.”

Charlotte underwent a critical operation that lasted nine and a half hours at Queen Alexander Hospital on June 7, 2022. The tumor part of the young woman’s tongue was cut off and replaced with a muscle taken from her leg.

Doctors removed her lymph nodes to see if the cancer had spread, and a hole was made in Charlotte’s throat so she could breathe easily.

EVERYONE BROUGHT IN TO TEARS WHEN SAYING ‘Hello’

 

The operation was successful, but no one knew whether the unfortunate woman would be able to speak again. After 4 days in intensive care, Charlotte was taken to the service and 10 days later, the tube in her throat was removed and she finally said her first words: ‘Hello’

Everyone in the room burst into tears at the young woman’s words.

HE STARTED UNIVERSITY

While she was recovering from surgery on her neck and leg, the young woman, who received help from a therapist to walk and talk, started university in September and started midwifery training after she fully recovered.

Describing her incredible experience, Charlotte now hopes to raise awareness about the signs and symptoms of the disease.
