Death of fish between Poland and Germany

The Oder River, which flows through Poland, Germany and the Czech Republic, has a huge amount of dead fish. The event, which occurred in an unprecedented scale, began around the end of July and appears to be the cause of the industrial pollution that led to the proliferation of a toxic alga.

Compared to the rest of the other member countries of the European Union, Poland is much more cautious with ecological transition policies, to the point of opposing the Green Deal in 2020 as 80% of the energy produced by the country comes from coal . In addition, in 2021 it presented the greatest problems in the air pollution sector. And it should be noted that almost all industries in Silesia dump their wastewater into the Oder River.

The responsible of the phenomenon seems to be the golden alga , also known with the name of prymnesium parvum , which grows preferentially in the estuaries of the rivers, where the fresh water ends up in the salty one. The Oder River has a much higher concentration of salts than normal, which leads to human pollution.

The environmental issue also risks leading to an economic problem especially for the activities that are located on the river bank as the situation could scare tourists.
