Instagram will introduce its new age recognition system also in Italy. The new system was presented for the first time last summer: it serves to enhance the safety of minors registered on Meta’s social networks, in order to protect themselves from possible harassment, but also to prevent them from accessing content intended for an adult audience. .

Not only that: the new system is also designed to prevent children under 13 from subscribing to Instagram, violating the social network’s policies.

The new system requires the user to upload an identity document . An unambiguous proof of the real age of the user that avoids possible exploits. The second system is more sophisticated: Instagram uses the algorithms of the startup Yoti to verify the user’s majority age simply by analyzing a photo of him. This solution is able to trace a person’s age quite accurately.

The user will have to record a short video, which will then be analyzed by Yoti’s algorithms. Meta explains that this system is anonymous and that the video, after being analyzed, is not saved on the company’s servers. Furthermore, Meta also specifies that Yoti’s technology is not a facial recognition system: it only estimates the user’s age, without identifying or recognizing his identity.
