Blue led light: because it makes you lose sleep

Blue light is much cheaper and more energy efficient , but according to one study, it can cause damage to the health of humans and animals. This is because it appears to increase the suppression of melatonin , the sleep regulating hormone .

The claim comes from a group of Exeter scientists who have detected, using images of the International Space Station . a change in night lighting technologies adopted in Europe.

White light LEDs are replacing the old orange lights as they have a brighter light and are more efficient. But what the researchers found is that the increase in this blue light is having major biological impacts across Europe.

Among the consequences , according to the Guardian , is its ability to suppress the production of the hormone that regulates sleep in humans and other organisms, namely melatonin. According to studies, this exposure to blue light from LEDs can lead to a worsening of sleep quality and a chronicity of various health conditions.

Italy, Romania, Spain and Ireland have been identified as the countries most vulnerable to the impacts of blue LED lights, which is less present in Germany and Austria, which still use fluorescent bulbs for most of the night lighting.

We should look at light from a broader biological perspective than that of humans alone to focus on better quality lighting that is harmonious with our natural world. Better  quality and lower lighting levels would help save energy and reduce financial costs , while also making our environment safer for invertebrates.
