Rings: why do they leave color on the skin?

If you have bought a beautiful costume jewelry ring and have worn it, you will have noticed that after a few days it leaves a black mark around your finger. Same thing happens to a pair of earrings or to necklaces and bracelets. But why do the rings leave the color? Are there any risks to the skin?

Here are the reasons for the phenomenon. The halos left can be red, black, green, in short, of different colors . This changes based on which metal makes up the ring. This metal comes into contact with water, sweat or skin fat. Also, even with lotions and hand creams, bubble baths and other products such as detergents. Here is what lies behind each color:

  • if the mark is black it means that the ring is silver or a silver alloy, which oxidizes in contact with the air and leaves a dark shadow
  • if it is green, the metal that reacts is copper
  • the red mark is typical of nickel or cobalt which reddens the skin and can cause burning and itching

The risk is that the skin and the body absorb these substances. In case of allergy , reactions can be triggered. These reactions result in the spot on the skin where the colored mark appeared. Sometimes they can spread to larger areas causing more severe allergic symptoms.

You have to be careful about buying poor quality jewelry . Then it is better to keep these objects away from salt water, lotions and other elements that promote oxidation . Always advisable to take them off when cleaning or washing in the shower. Preferably clean them separately using the right products.
