Edward Snowden obtained Russian citizenship , thanks to a decree signed by Vladimir Putin. The mole who revealed the NSA ‘s mass surveillance operation had been living in Russia for 9 years.

He was granted entry on a political refugee visa, after which he was granted a permanent residence permit in 2020. On that occasion Snowden had stated that he would soon apply for citizenship.

Together with Snowden, the Russian government has granted citizenship to 74 other foreign residents.

That of the Kremlin could be a poisoned meatball. The Kremlin is mobilizing reservists in view of an escalation of the military invasion of Ukraine. “In Russia, virtually every man between the ages of 18 and 65 is considered a reservist,” writes the US News portal.

But Snowden’s lawyers deny his possible involvement in the conflict. “He has never served in the Russian army, he cannot be drafted,” they explained to the Interfax news agency.

In 2013, Snowden revealed to the world the disturbing mass surveillance operation conducted by the NSA and the UK secret services. The  whistleblower , at the time an American intelligence contractor, had later revealed several espionage operations against politicians, military and diplomats of various foreign countries, including many countries formally allies of the United States.

Snowden recently announced that he is willing to return to the United States, as long as he is assured the right to a fair trial.
