A New Phase Has Been Entered In The Corruption scandal that led to the arrest of Greek parliamentarian Eva Kaili and the removal of her post as Vice President of the European Parliament (EP). Former EP member Italian parliamentarian Pier Antonio Panzeri, who was at the center of the accusations, decided to become a confessor in exchange for a lower sentence. The agreement reached by Panzeri with the Belgian judiciary has the quality to shake Brussels, especially the EP. With the confessions of Antonio Panzeri, the emergence of new names involved in corruption, which is stated to be related to Qatar and Morocco, is considered certain.

DEFERRED 5 YEARS PENALTY

According to the agreement reached between Panzeri, who admits that he is the leader of a criminal organization, and the prosecutor’s office, the former parliamentarian will be sentenced to five years in prison, but more than a year will be postponed. Antonio Panzeri, who will also receive a fine, will have all his assets worth one million Euros confiscated. Within the scope of his confessions, Panzeri will share with the Belgian judiciary the method of working, the financial arrangements made with third countries, the financial structures put into practice and those who benefit from them, the names of people whom he admits to have paid bribes and those who somehow participated in corruption. If the information is inaccurate or inconsistent, the deal will collapse.

FIRST VICTORY BELGIAN ATTORNEY

– One of the first victims of Panzeri’s confessions was Belgian parliamentarian Marc Tarabella, for whom the EP initiated the process to lift his immunity. Panzeri said that he did not receive any money from Qatar and gave Tarabella approximately 120-140 thousand Euros (2.4-2.8 million TL), 20 thousand Euros (407 thousand TL) each time. Tarabella’s lawyer, Maxim Töller, denied these allegations.

– The role of Eva Kaili’s boyfriend Francesco Giorgi, who is among the detainees, was also clearly disclosed by Panzeri.

–  Panzeri stated that Belgian parliamentarian Marie Arena, who was mentioned in corruption, had nothing to do with the issue. In the most significant corruption uncovered in EP history, 1.5 million euros (30.5 million TL) in cash were seized. As part of the operation, which was launched last December, four people are being held in pre-trial detention.
