SCO leaders sign the Samarkand Declaration

The Samarkand Declaration on the results of the 22nd Meeting of Heads of State of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization was signed.

The Samarkand Declaration of the SCO was signed regarding the results of the 22nd Meeting of Heads of State of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) held in the historical city of Samarkand in Uzbekistan.

The summit, hosted by the President of Uzbekistan, Şevket Mirziyoyev, came to an end at the congress center in the newly built “Silk Road Samarkand” international tourism zone in Samarkand.

Russian President Vladimir Putin, President of China Xi Jinping, President of Kazakhstan Kasım Cömert Tokayev, President of Kyrgyzstan Sadir Japarov, President of Tajikistan İmamali Rahman, Prime Minister of Pakistan Shahbaz Sharif, Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi, observer countries President of Belarus Aleksandr Lukashenko, Mongolia. President Ukhnaagiin Khurelsukh, President of Iran İbrahim Reisi, invited leaders President of Turkey Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, President of Turkmenistan Serdar Berdimuhammedov and President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev attended.

The leaders of SCO member Russia, China, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Pakistan, India and Uzbekistan signed the Samarkand Declaration on the results of the summit.

In the declaration, the leaders confirmed that the SCO is not directed against other states and international organizations and noted that they are open to cooperation, taking into account mutual interests.

The leaders called for increasing the effectiveness of the World Trade Organization and reforming the organization, taking into account the economic realities.

In the declaration, the leaders declared their intention to develop cooperation in the field of defense and security, to create a single list of terrorist and extremist organizations, also stressed the importance of conducting joint military exercises of the organization “Peace Mission” to combat terrorism.

Condemning the unilateral development of global missile defense systems by some countries, the leaders said that this negatively affects international security and stability.

Calling for compliance with the Convention on the Prohibition of the Development, Production, Stockpiling and Use of Chemical Weapons and Their Destruction, the leaders stressed their support for the demilitarization of space and the need for the signing of an international, legally binding document that could guarantee the prevention of an arms race in space.

Noting the importance of implementing the action plan regarding Iran’s nuclear program, the leaders underlined that the provisions of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty should be strictly followed.

The leaders noted the need for an inclusive government in Afghanistan with the participation of representatives of all ethnic, religious and political groups. In addition, the leaders who approved the title of “Goodwill Ambassador of the SCO” declared 2023 as the Year of Tourism.

After this summit, the SCO term presidency will pass to India, while the next SCO Summit will be held in India in 2023.

A total of 40 documents, including a comprehensive action plan for the implementation of the long-term good neighborly, friendship and cooperation agreement, were signed by the member states at the summit.
