Over the past 30 years, temperatures around the world have risen, but in Europe these have risen twice as fast as in the rest of the world. Between 1991 and 2021 the average temperatures increased by about 0.5 ° C every decade.

The recorded value is not only the highest but it is also the fastest increase recorded in the various continents and has been certified by the latest report on the state of the European climate produced by the WMO (World Meteorological Organization). The average temperature in 2021 was between the sixth and the tenth highest ever recorded. Last year was also among those most affected by adverse events caused by climate change .

Several regions experienced very high temperatures , such as Sicily which, in August, reached 48.8 ° C. Not to mention that these temperatures have led to an unprecedented drought that has contributed to the spread of truly devastating forest fires such as those in France, Greece and Italy.

Some areas were then hit by storms and floods which account for about 84% of extreme climatic events. These, in addition to the numerous victims, caused economic damage exceeding 50 billion dollars and affected the lives of 510 thousand people. Sea ice has also suffered the consequences of the climate crisis. In September, levels were found below the average of around 37%.
