Artists sue companies that create images with artificial intelligence

A group of artists have filed suit against artificial intelligence companies Stability AI, Midjourney and DeviantArt. Violation of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act was cited as the truth of the case.

With artificial intelligence, one of the most popular titles of the last period, almost everything can be done now. It is possible to compose music, write long and meaningful texts, produce images and much more with this technology. However, there are some problems with artificial intelligence. For example; There is a belief that after a while, the work done with artificial intelligence will make the work of individuals meaningless and the need for real people will decrease. It is not known whether this will be true, whether technology can really meet the need for human talent, but real artists have already started to take an attitude against artificial intelligence.

Some artists started to fight legally in this context. A group of artists, represented by the Joseph Saveri Law Firm , filed suit against artificial intelligence companies Stability AIMid journey, and DeviantArt. Violation of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act was cited as the truth of the case. Artists Sarah Andersen, Kelly McKernan and Karla Ortiz said they were trying to end this violation before their profession was wiped out by a computer program.

It is noteworthy that the artists did not sue OpenAI , one of the most popular companies of the last period, based only on these three companies . But at this point, it should be noted that OpenAI has commercially licensed the content of the training dataset and some of the training data from companies such as Shutterstock.

If the case goes to court, the court will have to resolve the differences between ethical and alleged legal violations. Plaintiffs want to prove that AI companies benefit commercially and profit richly from using copyrighted images. In this context, they demanded substantial compensation and permanent injunction. We will wait and see the developments on the subject together.
