Amazonia: record October for deforestation

2022 is the worst year for the Amazon. In just ten months, 9494 km2 of forest have been cleared.
In Brazil, deforestation in the Amazon wiped out 904km2 of vegetation in October. The official data released a few days ago and collected by the National Institute for Space Research (Inpe) via the Deter satellite system showed a 3% increase in the deforested area.
In just 10 months, 9494 km 2 of vegetation have been eliminated, breaking the record for the whole of 2021 with 9178 km 2 . According to the Brazilian section of the WWF , deforestation and fires have exploded following the results of the presidential elections which led to the victory of Luiz Inacio Lula da Silvia , who has always been committed to the fight against this phenomenon.
Under Bolsonaro’s presidency, the average annual deforestation has increased by 75% compared to the previous decade and, according to André Freitas of Greenpeace , the former president’s environmental policy will still cause damage for some time and changing the situation will be a major challenge .
The new government will have a lot of work to do to get the country back on track, to end the perception that the Amazon is a lawless land.
