Xiaomi 14: the Chinese company skips the ’13 Series’ for good luck

There will never be the Xiaomi 13 series . The reason? It brings bad luck and the Chinese are obsessed with superstition . For the same reason, many Chinese brands have never produced a fourth generation of their phones (due to an assonance with the word death in Mandarin).

The announcement comes directly from Xiaomi. The Xiaomi 13 series will be skipped, the next flagships will be directly called Xiaomi 14. Everything else remains as before: despite this curious branding choice, which could generate some confusion among Western consumers, the timeline will remain unchanged. The next Xiaomi flagships will still be presented over the next few months.

The first images of the packaging of the next top of the range branded Xiaomi have appeared on the net. The packages leave no room for misunderstandings: the name chosen is Xiaomi 14 , not 13.

Xiaomi’s choice in this case is less difficult to explain to the Western public, considering that the number 13 is considered unlucky in a large number of cultures, including the Italian one. Just think of the famous saga of horror films ‘Friday the 13th’.

Nonetheless, Western brands have not demonstrated the same concerns as their Chinese counterparts. In 2021 Apple announced its iPhone 13 and 13 Pro without making major problems. Evidently in this part of the world superstition affects sales less than it does in Asia.

Meanwhile Xiaomi has already started talking openly about 14 Series to refer to its upcoming flagships, for example by announcing that the next Xiaomi 14 will have the new Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chip .
